Why the map listing beats advertising and how to work with it

For a venue that lives off its own city, ratings on map services are the second strongest channel after targeted advertising. And the only one that works for free and around the clock.
Advertising brings in a person who does not know you yet. Reviews decide whether they reach your door. Between "4.9 with two hundred ratings" and "4.1 with eight ratings" the choice is made without a second thought.
Why it works better than advertising
It is a free flow. People search for "where to go nearby" right in the maps, bypassing any advertising
It accumulates. Switch off the targeting and the traffic disappears tomorrow. Reviews work for years
It affects the conversion of paid traffic. Someone who has seen an ad still goes to check the ratings
It matters to the family audience, which is almost half of the arena's guests. A parent almost always checks the reviews
Simple arithmetic A run of bad ratings in the first month of operation costs more than the advertising budget for the same month: advertising can be relaunched, while the average rating recovers only with dozens of new reviews.
What to fill in before opening
The business listing must be ready before the first guest arrives:
Name, address, the entrance in the mall – the guest must find you, not wander the floors
Opening hours that match the real ones
Live photos of the hall, the zones and the equipment, not renders
Prices or at least a range: their absence cuts off part of the inquiries
A link to online booking – from listing to booking in one click
Reviews almost never appear by themselves. A happy guest leaves quietly, an unhappy one writes – hence the skewed ratings at venues that do not work with feedback.
Ask at the right moment. Right after the game, while the emotion is fresh, not a week later
Ask in person. An administrator who says one sentence gets several times more reviews than a sign on the counter
Simplify the path. A QR code on the counter or on the receipt leads straight to the form
Do not buy them. Platforms detect fake reviews, and the penalties hurt more than a low rating
One sentence from the administrator – "if you enjoyed it, leave a review, it really helps us" – costs less than any advertising and works better than half of it.
What to do with negative reviews
Negative reviews are inevitable, and in reasonable numbers they are even useful: a listing made only of five stars looks suspicious. What matters is how you respond.
Always reply, and quickly. The reply is read not by the author but by the next hundred people
No arguing. A public dispute with a guest is a losing game in any case, even if you are right
To the point. "Thank you for your feedback" without specifics is worse than silence
With a solution. What exactly has been or will be fixed
Find the cause. Three reviews about stuffiness are not about reviews – they are about ventilation
Reviews as management data
Ratings are the most honest report on how a venue is run. Recurring themes almost always point to a specific operational problem:
Complaints about stuffiness → climate and ventilation
"We waited a long time" → schedule and intervals between sessions
"They did not explain the rules" → quality of the briefing, a training issue
"Dirty headset" → the equipment cleaning procedure
"Could not get through by phone" → handling of incoming calls, meaning lost event inquiries
The last point is directly about money: an unanswered call in this category almost always means the party was booked somewhere else.
Where to build it in It is convenient to assign review handling to the manager with a weekly review, and to include the average rating in the team's staff incentives.
