A VR franchise costs from $80K in total for a free-roam arena and from $100K for a multi-zone park in the WARPOINT network: a franchise fee from $50K or $70K, royalties of 7% of revenue from the 5th month, plus equipment, fit-out and launch. If the budget is below that, a subscription to the games from $10K with no fee and no royalties is the second way in. Here is what each line pays for.

Short answer: how much does a VR franchise cost in total?

The total cost of a VR franchise is the franchise fee plus equipment, fit-out, launch marketing and working capital; for WARPOINT formats that is from $80K for an ARENA and from $100K for a PARK.

The fee is the number franchisors advertise. The total investment is the number you need to raise, and it is usually one and a half to two times the fee. Royalties are the third number: they do not appear in the launch budget but shape the monthly economics for the whole term.

Across the market, free-roam VR arena franchises typically cost $80K–$300K in total, booth-based concepts can start from about $30K, and multi-zone parks go to $500K and more. These are general ranges by concept type, not the terms of a particular brand. A comparison of concept types by all criteria is in our review of the best VR franchises for 2027.

WARPOINT, a network of 300+ VR arenas in 185 cities and 18 countries, has been franchising since 2019; its revenue in 2025 was $36M, with 4M+ players a year. The figures in this article are the network's published terms, and the breakdown below explains what each of them includes.

Franchise fee: what does it cover?

A VR franchise fee pays for the right to the brand and games plus the launch package: training, the floor plan, software and marketing for the opening; in the WARPOINT network it is from $50K for an ARENA and from $70K for a PARK.

The fee is a one-off payment at signing. It is the easiest line to compare between franchisors and the easiest to misread, because two fees of the same size can include very different things. Ask for the list of what is inside and what is billed separately.

What the WARPOINT fee includes

  • Games. Own titles developed by the network, including WARPOINT ARENA 2.0: 2–10 players, 20 maps, 4 modes, rated 8+, with some games rated 6+. No per-minute content licences on top.
  • Launch programme. A step-by-step launch plan over 10 weeks and an online academy of 5 training modules. 60% of partners opened with no prior business experience.
  • Floor plan and requirements. The play area layout for your space, with ceiling from 2.5 m, power from 3 kW and internet of 20+ Mbit/s.
  • Software. ERP system, booking and analytics, so the schedule, the till and occupancy live in one place from day one.
  • Marketing. Materials and ad creatives from the network, which saves up to $2,500 a month on an in-house marketing team.
  • Esports. Access to the WARPOINT Battle platform: 500+ teams, leagues from Bronze to the Super Cup, a prize fund of $24,000, discounts up to 30% for league teams.

What the fee does not include

Equipment, fit-out, rent and deposits, the opening ad budget and working capital are paid separately and make up the difference between the fee and the total investment. Staff salaries before the opening belong there too. The next sections take these lines one by one.

Royalties and ongoing fees: what do you pay every month?

VR franchise royalties are usually a percentage of revenue, typically 5–8% across the market; WARPOINT charges 7% of revenue from the 5th month of operation, with no payment in the first four months.

Royalties are the line that most often stops people, so it is worth being exact about what they buy. In the WARPOINT network they pay for content updates, support, the software and the shared marketing of the network. The four-month holiday exists because the first months go to ramp-up: operational payback comes 40–70 days after opening, and royalties begin once the venue is already earning.

How to read royalties against revenue

At the network's average revenue of $13K a month per arena in 2025, 7% is about $910 a month. Set that against what an independent venue pays for the same things separately: game licences, a booking system, a marketing specialist and ad creatives. The saving on marketing alone is up to $2,500 a month, so the royalty is cheaper than buying its parts one by one.

Other recurring fees to ask about

  • Marketing fund. Some franchisors add a share of revenue on top of royalties for national advertising. Ask whether there is one and what it pays for.
  • Software fees. Booking and ERP are sometimes billed per month or per station. In the WARPOINT network the ERP system, booking and analytics come from the network as part of its support.
  • Content licences. Per-minute or per-title fees for third-party games can exceed royalties in a busy venue. Own games remove this line; the comparison of models is in our guide to licensing, buying or subscribing to VR arcade games.
  • Renewal and transfer fees. Paid at the end of the term or when the venue is sold. Ask for them in writing before signing.

Equipment, fit-out and launch costs: what is outside the fee?

Outside the fee, a VR franchise budget consists of equipment, fit-out of the space, launch marketing and working capital for the first two to three months; together they make up the larger part of the total investment.

These lines depend on your country, your landlord and your space, which is why a franchisor states them as "from" and gives the exact figure in a financial model for your city. The table shows what each line contains and what drives its size, so you can check any offer against it.

How the lines change with the format

An ARENA from 150 m² and a team of 3 people opens in 1–2 months, so rent and salaries before the opening are short. A PARK of 400–1,000 m² with Arena, VR Station (100+ games), Extreme, simulators and a lounge needs 2–3 months and a team from 7, so fit-out and working capital are bigger lines. That is the main reason the total investment moves from $80K to $100K and more.

Where partners save and where they should not

  • Space. An empty level floor, a ceiling from 2.5 m and no direct sunlight in the play area cut fit-out costs. A space that needs columns removed or a floor levelled costs more than the saving on rent.
  • Equipment. Buying below the network's specification saves money once and costs it every week in downtime. The specification is in the launch plan.
  • Launch marketing. This is the line that pays back fastest: over 40% of WARPOINT revenue comes from repeat visits and referrals, and the first guests are the start of that chain.

A full launch estimate for an independent venue, line by line, is in our article on how much it costs to open a VR arcade; the structure is the same, only the fee is replaced by content and software bought separately.

Franchise vs subscription model: two ways into VR

A VR franchise suits a budget from $80K and a dedicated venue under the network's brand; a subscription suits a budget from $10K and an existing venue that adds VR under its own brand, with no franchise fee and no royalties.

The two models are not a cheaper and a dearer version of the same thing. They answer different questions, and the budget is the fastest way to tell which question you are asking.

Choose the franchise if

  • you have a budget from $80K and a space from 150 m²;
  • you want a dedicated venue with group tickets, birthdays, corporate events and league play;
  • you need the launch plan, the brand and the network's marketing, because you are starting from zero.

Choose the subscription if

  • your budget is from $10K and you already have a venue with traffic – an FEC, a bowling centre, a trampoline park, a cinema;
  • you want to keep your own brand and pay a fixed monthly sum from $1,150 instead of royalties;
  • you want to test VR demand before investing in a full arena.

Pricing of the subscription depends on the term and the number of play spots, so the exact monthly figure comes from the calculator. If this is your case, calculate your subscription on the WARPOINT subscription page.

What to do next

Add up the three numbers: the fee, the total investment and the royalties as a share of expected revenue, and compare offers on all three, not on the fee alone. If the total is from $80K, the franchise is the route; if it is nearer $10K, the subscription is. The honest trade-offs of each route against building on your own are in our comparison of a VR arcade franchise and an independent launch.

Figures are based on WARPOINT network data and are not a guarantee of future results. Actual performance depends on location, market and management.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the VR franchise fee?

The WARPOINT franchise fee is from $50K for the ARENA format and from $70K for the PARK format. It covers the right to the brand and own games, a step-by-step launch plan over 10 weeks, an online academy of 5 training modules, the floor plan, the ERP system with booking and analytics, and marketing materials and ad creatives from the network. Equipment and fit-out are paid separately.

What are the royalties in a VR franchise?

Royalties in the WARPOINT network are 7% of revenue, charged from the 5th month of operation; the first four months are free of royalties. They pay for content updates, support, software and the shared marketing of the network. Across the market, VR franchise royalties typically range from 5% to 8% of revenue, sometimes with a separate marketing fund on top.

What is the total investment in a VR franchise?

Total investment includes the fee, equipment, fit-out, launch marketing and working capital. In the WARPOINT network it is from $80K for an ARENA (from 150 m², a team of 3 people) and from $100K for a PARK (400–1,000 m², a team from 7). The exact figure depends on the city, the space and the lease, and is stated in the financial model for your location.

Can I get WARPOINT games without buying the franchise?

Yes. The subscription gives access to WARPOINT games under your own brand from $10K, with no franchise fee and no royalties, from $1,150 per month on a 60-month term. It is designed for venues that already have traffic, such as family entertainment centers, bowling centres or cinemas, and for owners who want to test demand before opening a full arena.

How fast does a VR franchise pay back?

In the WARPOINT network, payback starts from 10 months for an ARENA and from 14 months for a PARK, with operational payback 40–70 days after opening. Average revenue per arena was $13K a month in 2025, and the profitability of operating locations is 25–40%. Actual payback depends on location, rent, market and management, so ask for a model built on your city.
